French Canadian Beef Stew

I have been wanting to start adding recipes to my blog... but to be honest I've been really bad at keeping up my blog lately. That combined with the thought of needing to take pictures to post with my recipes is a little overwhelming! In regards to recipe and cooking ideas i'm a huge fan of Pioneer Woman, Megan Russell, and my sister (who doesn't blog her recipes but shares them with me!) :) Another fun thing is having friends around the world who have all different cooking styles... So here is the first recipe I'm going to share from a Canadian friend ~ French Canadian Beef Stew! Enjoy.

French Canadian Beef Stew

3lb stewing beef (cubed)
1oz flour
2 garlic cloves (crushed)
12 oz red wine
4 large carrots (chopped)
2 celery stalks (chopped)
1tbsp salt
1tbsp pepper
½ 1tbsp paprika
2 bay leaves
½ lb lean bacon
2 large onions (chopped)
1 lb mushrooms (chopped)
1tbsp tomato puree

Cooking Time: 2 ½ - 3 hrs (use heavy lidded casserole)


Brown beef.
Sprinkle flour & garlic onto meat, stirring until four turns brownish
Put into heavy lidded casserole dish
Blend in red wine & sufficient water to cover the meat
Add the carrots, celery, salt, pepper, paprika, bay leaves & braise for about 2 hours @ 350F

In separate frying pan:

Fry the bacon, pour off fat, then chop up
Combine bacon & onions & stir until glossy
Add mushroom pieces & stir for 10 min
Add tomato puree & mix into the stew
Braise for another 20 minutes & then enjoy
Top with puff pastry cap
